It has been two years since we started our artful project with a get-together at London’s Whitechapel Gallery, with monthly 'Start the Week' webinars ever since.

Conceived and co-hosted by Mayvin Director James Traeger and Dr Rob Warwick (Univ. of Chichester), and delivered alongside guest practitioners, the aim is to provide a space away from linear, more established ways of thinking about their work and encourage a more creative and imaginary approach. Participants often comment that the chance to occupy an often radically different perspective, or simply “be” in a more creative mode, helps them free up sticky challenges that may have been blocking progress once they ‘return’ to thinking about work. Meeting on a Monday morning is intentional – to preserve the ripple effect as far into the working week as possible.

Podcast
James and Rob reflected on the last two years in the latest episode of our podcast. They explored what we hoped to achieve at the start, why it is important for people and organisations, what we have done and the people we have met along the way. We finish with a few clues as to what might emerge.

The Fertile Void
Our latest webinar took place on Monday 22nd March and the topic was 'The Fertile Void'. Two of our team found the session so inspiring that they went away and wrote blog pieces as a result. You can read both Sian's “I know this space, but somehow I need a nudge to remember to find it” and Claire's Working from home: why we should make time to stare out of the window on our website.

Ethical Dilemmas
In our February session we focused on artful ways of looking at/engaging with ethical dilemmas in our work. To enable insight into the dilemmas themselves through the use of graphic illustration and inquiry led by Julian Burton.

We received some wonderful feedback that we wanted to share with you:

“Even though my drawing is simplistic, the process allows access to feelings / events I hadn’t noticed myself”

“deeply grateful. great deeper insights from other’s questions and the breaking of the cognitive spell.”

“I discovered in the process a deeper level of what the dilemma is really about.”

“drawing the image enabled my thoughts to grow as I was exploring new elements of the image, thank you!”

“drawing it helped me realise its not a resolvable dilemma, but its also not one problem..a range of problems and sorting them out into ‘piles’ enabled me to see some ways forward…”

Start the Week Webinars

We invite people to come along on a Monday morning 10-11am and instead of starting their week with emails and to do lists, we invite them to pause and participate in a form of artful practice. This has ranged from bread making, photography, sketching and embroidery. For information and details about future events take a look here: Events Calendar
