Tony Nicholls

Principal Consultant

BSc (Hons), MSc

Tony brings a strategic perspective, creating space for clients to understand their contexts and to reflect on their ways of working. Clients value his calm, reflective and occassionally challenging presence.

With an inquiring mind and ability to see patterns in complex situations, Tony brings insight, commercial experience and practical solutions.

Starting his career as a Design Engineer in Aerospace, Tony soon realised that people, not planes, were his passion. Moving to a customer-focused role within Financial Services, Tony built a successful practice servicing private and small business clients. It was during this period that he benefited from some of the best personal, leadership and business development practices of the time. This ignited his passion for people and Organisation Development and there followed a series of senior corporate roles in Learning and Development, Strategic Human Resources and Organisation Development.

Following the completion of an MSc in People and Organisation Development, Tony focused on developing his practice through consulting and interim roles. During this time, he supported small and large organisations in a variety of sectors. Projects included shaping strategy, changing culture, developing leaders and managers, and facilitating team effectiveness.

Tony works with the private, public and third sectors. Private sector organisations include Zurich, Capital One, The Co-operative Bank, Direct Line Group, Close Brothers and Virgin Media, plus numerous small-to-medium manager-owned businesses. In the public sector Tony works across the UK Civil Service and with Local Government organisations. Tony is faculty lead for the UK Civil Service Organisation Design and Development capability development programmes.

Underpinning Tony’s approach is a focus on exploring context, surfacing perceived realties and inviting alternative ways to articulate individual needs and organisation goals. Central to his practice is the development of more grounded, resilient individuals and more collaborative, innovative organisations.

Tony regularly blogs about his experiences and thinking, and his book "Managing Change in Organisations" was published in December 2022. He has written articles for HR publications and for the business pages of The Times, The Telegraph and The Guardian.

Tony lives in the heart of the English Lake District with his wife, Jane and two Border Terriers, Elsie and Maud.
